pH Balancing or acidic?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, covered with trillions of microorganisms, just like your gut. These tiny helpers, including good bacteria, live all over your skin and keep it healthy. One of their main jobs is maintaining your pH balance. Healthy skin stays slightly acidic, between 4.5 and 5.5, creating a protective layer called the “acid mantle.” Good bacteria make natural acids, like lactic acid, to keep this pH steady. This acidity stops bad germs, traps moisture, and fights irritation. But harsh soaps, sweat, or pollution can mess it up, making your skin too alkaline—above 6 or 7. That can cause dryness, itchiness, or more body odor, especially in your underarms, groin, and intimate areas.

There are two ways to tackle it: use an acidifying or an acidic body wash. Acidic soaps and washes push your skin’s pH down fast with low-pH formulas. Acidifying WASH helps keep your skin naturally acidic over time by supporting its own system. These approaches are different, and one does a better job for your skin all over—including those smelly spots.

Acidifying soaps and washes use a low pH, like 4 or less, to make your skin acidic quickly. If your pH balance is off from a rough soap or a hot day, this can fix it for a little while. But it’s not a lasting solution. Once you rinse off the wash, your skin can bounce back—sweat or oils might raise the pH again. It doesn’t help your good bacteria, so the real issue sticks around. Plus, some cheap surfactants in these low-pH washes can be troublesome. Coco betaine, a common one in budget soaps, can dry out your skin at low acidity by pulling away its natural moisture.
